Understanding Septic

Maintaining Your Septic System

  1. Start by locating your system. Go into your basement and find the direction that the sewer pipe runs through the wall.
  2. Next, uncover the manhole and then locate an inspection port. You may need to do some digging.
  3. Check your connections. You will want to turn on the water and flush your toilets to ensure the system is working correctly and the waste is going to the system.
  4. Now the sludge and scum will need to be measured. Your local inspector will do this with special equipment that is inserted into the inspection ports.
